Topic of the Month  - Myths about Rabbits Ears!

There are two main myths circulating about rabbits ears (or any form of haired skin "treat" such as cow scalp).

NUMBER ONE - THEY NATURALLY WORM A DOG.

Errr nope! Give this more than a milliseconds thought and the illogical basis for this should be glaringly apparent, yet somehow it persists as a common practice amongst dog owners.

In an age of modern medicine why are we still using medieval like remedies that have no basis in fact let alone medicine. No one is putting hot pigeons on their heads for a headache and people are generally not putting snail slime on warts. People realised these practices were - well - stupid.

Intestinal worms attach to the wall of the intestine to stop themselves being pushed out by day to day intestinal movements. They are not going to give a flying monkey about a bit of haired skin passing by. Soggy haired skin is not nature's Brillo pad. Just think about it - if this actually worked then all wild carnivores would never have an intestinal parasite!

NUMBER TWO - THEY NATURALLY FLEA A DOG.

Well if number one fell into the realms of fantasy, this idea walked off the same page as the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy.  By what machinations of the imagination ingesting a rabbits ear produces flea genocide is beyond me and the rest of the scientific fraternity. It really is no better than witchcraft and has no place in modern veterinary medicine. That said if anyone can provide a logical explanation that is scientifically demonstrable as to how this miracle might occur I am very willing to listen!

NUMBER THREE - RABBITS EARS ARE A SOURCE OF FIBRE

Sorry but this is just plain factually wrong and demonstrates how complete ignorance of basic biology can become promoted so that the public believe it. Hair is keratin, a protein, skin is cellular material and collagen which is also, a protein!. There is NO fibre in a rabbits ear. Fibre comes from vegetable matter and cereals (bran, oats etc).

Haired skin does not aid digestion, can cause obstructions and aggravates gastritis and inflammatory disease.

They should not be sold in pet stores (neither should hooves, deer antlers, pigs ears or cooked bones).

SO please please dont believe the lies.

Be responsible and worm and deflea with approved and proven products â€‹â€‹
